Arsenal’s longest running transfer saga of the summer has concerned their interest in Real Madrid’s defensive midfielder, Sami Khedira. If rumours are to be believed, The Gunners could be about to wrap this deal up before the transfer window slams shut.
It’s taken a while, but it looks like this deal could be about to get dragged over the line.
The Gunners certainly have a need for a new defensive midfielder. With Mikel Arteta out injured with a knee problem (whilst also not being a ready made defensive midfielder) and Mathieu Flamini getting on in years, Arsenal should be scouring the market for options.
The sooner somebody is brought in, the better. Mathieu Flamini worked hard against Everton, but he didn’t seem to really effect the game in a meaningful way. He’s in the team to break-up play and prevent the opposition from getting into dangerous areas, but he couldn’t stop The Toffees from carving Arsenal up – twice.
He’s no Gilberto Da Silva. He’s not even as good as Alex Song (who Arsenal have never really managed to replace).
Sami Khedira, on the other hand, is the real deal. Since moving to Real Madrid from Stuttgart in 2010, he has made 144 appearances. That shows how important he is to Madrid – he’s an integral part of their midfield (which is already fit to bursting with talented players).
Arsenal are in a privileged position here. Khedira has refused to agree new terms at Real Madrid and with a single year left on his contract, he’s now available at a bargain price. The Metro suggest that he could be available for as a little as £12m.
Considering his experience, know-how and age, that’s a great price.
He’s a player that looks custom-built for Premier League action. He’s strong, he’s tough in the tackle and he’s good in the air. He’d add a serious amount of steel to The Gunners’ midfield. Isn’t that exactly what they need at this moment in time?
