Could Liverpool REALLY pull off this £50m deal?

Marco ReusLiverpool’s (rumoured) interest in Marco Reus is very exciting indeed. Whilst he’s not quite on Luis Suarez’s level, he’s not a million miles away. This could end up being the big-money signing that The Reds need to make following the Uruguayan’s exit.

Replacing a player like Luis Suarez isn’t easy. Thus far, Rodgers has opted to bring in a number of lesser players, rather than swooping for a big name. Marco Reus would represent a change of tact.

There’s only one issue: this deal does look hugely unlikely. Why would his club, Borussia Dortund, choose to sell up? And why would Marco Reus choose to move to Liverpool. Surely he’d have his choice of suitors, were he to look to move on this summer?

Luckily, The Metro have been able to build a rather compelling case for a potential Liverpool deal for Marco Reus. They note that the player’s rejected a new Borussia Dortmund. As a result, a release clause in his contract will activate next summer, making the player available to anybody who bids £27m.

The Germans wont want to risk losing out on Reus for this (relatively) paltry sum. The aforementioned source suggests that if Liverpool were to come in with an offer of £50m, it may be enough to tempt them into selling.

They also carry quotes from the player’s agent, Dirk Hebel, who makes it clear that there’s genuine interest throughout Europe in his charge. Why wouldn’t there be? Here’s what he had to say:

‘Marco would make any big European team stronger. That’s why it’s completely normal that a number of these major European teams are interested in signing him.’

True enough.

Finally, The Metro claim that Dortmund are already on the hunt for a Marco Reus-like replacement, linking the Germans to Roma’s Adem Ljajic. All of this is very promising indeed for Liverpool.

It’s not clear whether Liverpool have £50m left to spend this summer, but if they do, they should consider spending it on this German superstar. In 90 games for Dortmund, he’s found the back of the net 42 times. How The Reds could use that kind of firepower.

Of course, even if Brendan Rodgers has the cash available he still needs to convince Reus that a move to Anfield is the next logical step in his career. Let’s just hope that he’s feeling persuasive.

What’s your take? Where does Marco Reus’s future lie?
