At the time of writing, Thomas Vermaelen’s future at The Emirates looks uncertain at best. Arsenal aren’t exactly spoiled for choice in the centre-back department, yet the Belgian bruiser still can’t crack the first team.
The form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker must be to blame. The little and large, French and German duo seem to have added some much needed steel to The Gunners back line. Moreover, the two seem to compliment each other.
Whilst Thomas Vermaelen is a good defender, he doesn’t seem to play well with others. When he plays alongside Koscielny, he often seems to lose all semblance of sense. It’s a strange, troubling transformation.
As a result, his future at Arsenal is now under threat. Both Manchester United and Barcelona are thought to be interested and if the player wants a new challenge, then you can hardly blame him.
But should he choose to move on this summer, The Gunners will need to have a replacement signing ready to go.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that ‘Arsene Wenger wants to be kept informed about the availability of Mats Hummels’. This strikes me as very exciting news indeed.
As a defensive option, Hummels must surely be considered a significant upgrade on Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian ace hasn’t been in form for the best part of the last year. Mats Hummels, on the other hand, has just helped his international side to World Cup victory. He’ll still be buzzing.
There’s no doubting the German’s talent. He positions himself extremely well, he’s strong in the air and he’s fierce in the tackle. There was one moment in the World Cup final where Lionel Messi did him for pace, but this may be the only chink in his armour.
He’s more like Mertesacker than he is like Koscielny. Still, it’s easy to see him adapting quickly to the Premier League and helping to guide Arsenal to further levels of success.
The Mirror claim that the player could be available for £30m. Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger doesn’t hesitate to make his second big signing of the summer.

Mat Hummels is by miles better than Vermerlene who sometimes forgets that he is first and foremost a defender. Cant stop going forward and creating avoiding gaps in defense. YES, Mat’s a better choice; at least much more stable and natural CD
