Could Arsenal really be in the market for this £50m talent?

ReusArsenal have already brought in one hugely exciting player (Alexis Sanchez) this summer. If Arsene Wenger were to make another marquee signing during this transfer window, excitement might boil over into outright hysteria.

Arsenal fans just aren’t used to seeing their club spending so freely (and so early in the summer). All this activity makes for a nice change. Still, there’s little doubt that The Gunners would benefit from another player coming in and fleshing out their squad.

Most of the attention seems to be on Arsenal’s hunt for a new defensive midfielder. The Professor may be looking for an option in this department, but it’s worth noting that he’s more or less permanently got his eye on attacking talent. Fleet-footed forwards have always been The Gunners bread and butter after all.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal could be in the market for Marco Reus. They label it a ‘salacious rumour’, but it’s difficult not to get excited nonetheless. Could Wenger really be interested in this talented (and expensive) German talent?

Let’s hope so. The aforementioned source claims that Reus’s £35m release clause activates next summer. They suggest that Dortmund may be prepared to sell up now, if a club were to come in with a considerably bigger fee – say £50m.

That’s a huge amount of cash, but it’s probably not outside of The Gunners financial reach. With the commercial deals they’ve sealed in recent years, they’re truly capable of competing with the big boys in the transfer market.

It may prove to be a smart move. Reus’s form over the last two seasons has been sensational. He’s made 90 appearances for Dortmund and has found the back of the net 42 times. That’s the kind of return that most strikers would kill for.

This deal still looks unlikely, but there’s no doubt that it could have a massive impact on the future of Arsenal Football Club. If Wenger can make this happen he really will have secured his legacy.

What’s your take? Where does Marco Reus’s future lie?
