Mats HummelsHaving sold club captain and third-choice centre-back, Thomas Vermaelen, a mere week or so before the start of the new season, The Gunners are now in a rather perilous position.

With Laurent Koscielny injured and Per Mertesacker still convalescing from the demands of winning The World Cup, Arsenal are now seriously short of options in the centre-back department.

Do Arsenal fans really want to see Arsene Wenger deploy a makeshift defense of Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal against Premier League opposition? Whilst Chambers looked excellent against Manchester City, he’s still a raw, inexperienced challenge. Monreal, on the other hand, is an out-and-out left-back. I’m not sure what he’s doing in the centre of the defense.

Luckily, Arsene Wenger still has time to right this wrong.

The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that The Gunners are readying a ‘late challenge’ for Manchester United target and Borussia Dortmund star, Mats Hummels. If this deal were to go through, it’ll be the second major signing that Arsenal make this summer (having already spent big on Alexis Sanchez).

At just 25-years-old, Hummels is already remarkably experienced. He’s been a Dortmund mainstay for years, thanks to his positional nous, his strength on and off the ball and his aerial dominance. Whilst he’s not the quickest along the turf, he is an excellent all rounder. He’d be sure to give the likes of Laurent Koscielny a run for his money.

As you might expect, he wouldn’t come cheap. The aforementioned source suggest that Dortmund are ‘demanding in excess of £25m’ for this superstar centre-back. That’s a significant sum, but given the commercial deals that The Gunners have signed in recent times, it probably won’t be enough to put Arsene Wenger off.

Whether he can see off attention from Manchester United is another matter entirely. They’ve already refused to sell Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United this summer. This is The Professor’s next opportunity to secure a victory over The Red Devils in the transfer market.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal afford to compete for Mats Hummels?
