Are Arsenal REALLY interested in this £20m Italian sensation?

Lorenzo InsigneWhen Theo Walcott picked up a long-term injury last season, The Gunners threat down the flanks was notably diminished. Without Theo’s pace and goal-scoring nous,  Arsenal just didn’t have as much threat in the final third.

That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsene Wenger move in for a new winger this summer. It’s the one part of his midfield that could use a little more work.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are interested in Napoli’s wing-wizard, Lorenzo Insigne. The source even claims that Arsene Wenger is ‘said’ to have ‘tabled a £20m offer’. Sounds pretty serious, right?

Unfortunately, the source also carries quotes from the player’s agent, Fabio Andreotti, who notes that Arsenal have not yet enquired about Insigne. Check out his comments:

“We have not been contacted by Arsenal for Lorenzo Insigne and Napoli has not notified us of this interest. Lorenzo is a target of several European sides so it wouldn’t surprise me if big clubs are interested in him. However, Napoli don’t want to put him in the market.”

Arsenal fans may well be disappointed by Andreotti’s comments. Not only have The Gunners not registered their interest, Napoli aren’t interested in selling up. It’s not the ideal situation.

Still, Insigne is a player who’s worth pursuing.  He made 37 appearances for the Serie A side last season and scored 8 goals. He also demonstrated his pace, creativity and technical ability. I’m sure he’d make an excellent addition to this Arsenal squad.

Insigne was a part of Italy’s World Cup squad. That’s right, the same squad who kick-started England’s demise, before crashing out of the competition alongside The Three Lions. Could he now end up moving to an English club?

Time will tell. If Arsenal are genuinely interested in the player, they certainly have enough money to make a deal happen. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is willing to loosen the purse strings this summer.

What’s your take? Would Lorenzo Insigne be the right choice for The Gunners? Who else should Arsene Wenger be looking at?
