Why this £20m German would be the perfect Manchester United signing:

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic gone, it’s time for Manchester United to get serious about their defense. Yes, they’ve brought in Southampton full-back Luke Shaw, but what about a centre-back? Shouldn’t that have been Louis Van Gaal’s key priority this summer?

Of course there’s plenty of time left to make a decision. Perhaps the new Manchester United boss is simply biding his time until he’s capable of bringing in the best possible option?

If The Mirror are to be believed, the Dutchman is finally ready to spring into action. The source claims that Van Gaal is set to make a £20m bid for German international centre-back, Mats Hummels. If they were to pull this deal off, it would represent a significant step in the right direction for The Red Devils.

At only 24-years-old, Hummels is already a highly experienced centre-back. He’s already made 227 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. He’s also accrued 33 caps for the German international side and it looks like he’s going to be a part of that particular set-up for quite some time.

As for his qualities, let’s start with the obvious one first: the man’s an absolute giant. At 6 foot 4 inches tall, he’s completely dominant in the air. Luckily, he’s also significantly quicker along the turf than his international defensive partner, Per Mertesacker. He’s a fine tackler, he makes plenty of interceptions and he’s an extremely hard worker.

I’m sure he’d make for a great addition to this Manchester United squad. He looks like he’s custom built for Premier League action.

Whether Borussia Dortmund would be prepared to sell for as little as £20m remains to be seen. He’s an integral part of their team and they won’t be willing to let him go without a fight. Still, if they do hold out for more money, Manchester United should have the financial fortitude to force a deal through.

Let’s hope so anyway. Mats Hummels could prove to be exactly what Manchester United need.
