Is this Manchester United target really worth £37m?

William CarvalhoManchester United have already added Ander Herrera to their midfield this summer, but they continue to get linked to further options. In particular, the press seem to be linking The Red Devils to a large number of defensively-minded midfielders.

This makes a lot of sense. United have a large number of technically gifted, but physically slight players in their squad (Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, Shinji Kagawa, etc). These are players who can be game-winners on their day, but need time and space on the ball if they’re to really work their magic.

Bringing in a midfield enforcer type could prove to be just the ticket. They need a player whose sole role involves guarding the back-four, breaking up opposition play, feeding it into more advanced midfielders and maintaining possession.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that long-term Manchester United target William Carvalho could be available this summer for the cheap, cheap price of £37m. If Louis Van Gaal is willing to loosen his club’s purse strings, he could well get his hand on the midfield general he so clearly needs.

The source carries quotes from Sporting Lisbon’s Augusto Ignacio. He notes that the Primeira Liga side aren’t in a position where they need to sell players like Carvalho, but are prepared to negotiate:

“It’s not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price. We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives, who will want to play as well. The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.

“It is not easy to negotiate for players, you need to be very shrewd but Sporting have a president who knows how to negotiate with anyone and what is best for the club.”

Interesting stuff. The fact that Carvalho’s already worth £37m at just 22-years-old is very impressive indeed. He’s athletic, he works hard and he dives into tackles with gay aplomb. He looks like the kind of player who would take to Premier League action with consummate ease.

Whilst Manchester United would do well to try and negotiate his price-tag down, there’s no doubt that he’s a fine option.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils really consider spending £37m on William Carvalho?
