Should Arsenal snap up this Spanish legend as a free transfer?

Victor Valdes (Barcelona)Wojciech Szczesny has nailed down a long-term starting role at The Emirates, but Arsenal still seem to be picking up links to some pretty talented keepers.

The Polish ace has just enjoyed his most consistent season yet and was essential to keeping The Gunners at the top of the Premier League table for so long. His fine shot-stopping ability kept Arsenal in games that they probably should have lost.

But The Gunners back-up option, Lukasz Fabianski has jumped ship for Swansea City. Arsene Wenger now needs to make a decision: does he bring in a reserve keeper who’s good enough to challenge for Szczesny’s first team role, or somebody who’s more likely to spend his time at The Emirates warming the bench?

It won’t be an easy decision, but according to The Mirror, The Gunners are locked in a transfer battle with Manchester United for former Barcelona ace, Victor Valdes. It looks like Wenger is opting to keep Szczesny on his toes.

At 32-years-old, Valdes is a highly experienced individual. He’s made 535 appearances for Barcelona and has 20 caps for Spain. He’s also got 21 major titles to his name, including 6 La Liga titles and 3 Champions League winner medals. Whatever way you cut it, the man’s a winner.

Signing Valdes may have an effect on Szczesny’s development. The Spaniard could well end up usurping the Pole’s place in this Arsenal team. But maybe that’s no bad thing? Maybe a little bit of competition is exactly what Szczesny needs to keep producing top level performances.

What’s more, Valdes could act as a mentor to the young keeper. He’s 32-years-old now and may only have a few years left at the peak of his powers. When his excursion at The Emirates is over, Szczesny will be able to make the step up, as a more mature, well-rounded keeper.

Given that he’d be available as a free transfer, it’s not like this is a big gamble for The Gunners. I’m sure he’ll want a hefty wage packet, but he’s certainly deserving of it. It’ll be interesting to watch this one play out.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be interested in this former Barcelona great?
