According to The Metro, Arsenal are weighing up a bid for Newcastle’s star full-back Mathieu Debuchy. Is this just tabloid nonsense, or could The Gunners really be interested in this French international?

The more I mull this potential deal over in my mind, the more it makes sense. Having just lost their star right-back, Bacary Sagna, Arsene Wenger needs to fill the void. Carl Jenkinson is still too young and inexperienced, so why wouldn’t The Professor move in for somebody who has 23 caps for the French international team?

Wenger’s extremely knowledgable when it comes to French football. He’ll know all of Debuchy’s strengths and weaknesses. If he wants to sign the French full-back, it’s because he thinks that he’s good enough to help spur his club onto bigger and better things. Perhaps fans should trust his judgement.

At 28-years-old, Debuchy is considerably more experienced than most of the other right-back options that Arsenal have been linked to this summer. He’s also got bag loads of Premier League experience. He’s the kind of player who could come in and make an instant impact at The Emirates. Isn’t that exactly what The Gunners need?

What’s more, The Metro note that Debuchy recently gave an interview where he highlighted his desire for Champions League football. Arsenal could offer him this, alongside a realistic opportunity of competing for silverware next year. He’s a player who’s good enough to compete at the top level and Arsene Wenger could provide him with the opportunity to do exactly that.

Arsenal fans may view him as a step down on their previous option, Bacary Sagna, but most right-backs are. The main thing to keepĀ in mind is that he’s 3 years younger and hasn’t had as bad an injury record. In other words, he’s a good long-term option for The Gunners. That’s yet another reason to consider snapping him up this summer.

Whether Newcastle United are prepared to sell is another matter, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsene Wenger were tempted to test the waters.

What’s your take? Is Mathieu Debuchy the right choice for The Gunners?

Debuchy is not a step down on Sagna. He has overtaken Sagna in the France national team list. I’d prefer Debuchy to the other touted options if only for his PL experience which should allow him slot into the team straight away. But question is: will we pay up? Remember Cabaye!
