Whilst fans like to see their club make exciting additions to their forward line-up, Manchester United’s most important signings this summer are likely to be defensive recruits.
I’m sure that Louis Van Gaal would have liked to arrive at Old Trafford with bags of cash to spend on a new look forward line. But the exit of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdiand necessitate a different tact.
The two centre-backs will be severely missed at Old Trafford next season. The leadership qualities, experience and defensive nous they provided were invaluable. The exit of Patrice Evra won’t help either.
But it’s a new era in Manchester United’s history and it’s time to bring in some fresh options.
This brings me to The Red Devils purported interest in Germany international, Mats Hummels. The 25-year-old, who has been building his reputation at Borussia Dortmund (over the course of 227 games), looks like a good fit for United.
Hummels has experience at every level and the quality to make a mark in the Premier League. The 6 ft 3 in defender is a giant of a man, who’s dominant in the air, physically tough and strong in the tackle. He’s also a smart cookie who positions himself well and wins a lot of interceptions.
It strikes me that he’s got a similar defensive style to that belonging to Rio Ferdinand. In that sense, he’s the perfect replacement.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United are close to agreeing a £16m deal for the player. They also suggest that Hummels has ‘snubbed’ Barcelona this summer because he favours a move to Old Trafford.
I find it hard to believe that Hummels could be available for just £16m. Given his current stature in the game, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dortmund valued him at twice that figure. If that’s all he’d cost, The Red Devils would be foolish not to snap him up.
Either way, let’s hope that Van Gaal is on the case. Mats Hummels could prove to be a very important signing indeed.

United would be crazy not to pay the 23M release clause for Hummels. They desperately need a world class CB and Hummels is twice the defender that Luis is. In addition, De Vrij is not of the same quality as Hummels. If Man U aspires to be one of the elite teams, they have to get elite players. There is only a short period of time left for teams to work new players into their preseason games so the sooner they act, the more likely it is that United will start the season strong.

I think mat hummel is the perfect signing to be made by van gasket to solidify the defence of manchester united this season and with the help of luke shaw and the others can make the team stand firm to fight back for more cups this this coming season and era.
