I’m sure that Brendan Rodgers would have hoped to have a deal for Adam Lallana all wrapped up by now. With The Reds looking to move quickly in the summer transfer market, bringing in somebody as talented as this particular Southampton midfielder could have proven to be a masterstroke. Brendan Rodgers knows how to work the transfer market and Lallana could well have been his best signing yet.
Unfortunately, The Saints seem to have other ideas. They aren’t giving up their captain without a fight. In fact, according to The Mirror, talks between Southampton and Liverpool have hit ‘the buffers’ and as a result, they could look elsewhere.
The source even note who that player could be. They claim that Liverpool view Schalke’s 18-year-old midfield prodigy, Max Meyer, as a ‘cheaper alternative’ to Lallana.
Max’s ability on the ball, pace and confidence have already seen him garner comparisons to players like Mario Gotze and Lionel Messi (that last one’s a bit lazy, isn’t it?). He’s developed his excellent technique from years and years of futsal training and games. That’s why he’s such an exciting player to watch and why he’s such a deadly force in the final third.
Max is only 18-years-old, but last season he made a total of 41 appearances for Schalke. That’s a surprising amount of game-time for such a young player. Better still, he managed to contribute in a meaningful way, scoring 7 goals.
His fellow Schalke youngster, Julian Draxler, tends to get more attention from other clubs, but it’s difficult to understand why. Draxler played 38 games last season, scoring 6 goals. In other words, he made less of an impact than Meyer.
With The Mirror suggesting that Meyer could be available for as little as £8m, this looks like a no-brainer for The Reds. Unfortunately, they may have to see off competition from Chelsea, but if they’re able to do this, they’ll be landing a top quality player.
If that means missing out on Adam Lallana, then so be it.
