Since moving to Southampton last summer Dejan Lovren has seen his reputation grow and grow. The Croatian ace has been in excellent form all season long, adjusting to the Premier League with consummate ease and asserting his defensive dominance on a number of occasions.
It’s not so much that he’s a good defender. No, Lovren is valuable because he’s a consistent one. He doesn’t make mistakes, he makes a huge number of tackles and interceptions, he’s vocal and he’s cool-headed. In other words, he’s someone who can be relied upon.
At 24-years-old, he’s about to enter his peak. Whilst Southampton are clearly a club on the rise, Lovren may have bigger ambitions. I’m sure he’ll want to play out his best footballing years in the Champions League. A club like Liverpool could provide him with this.
According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers and co. are keeping tabs on the Croatian centre-back. What’s more, the source claims that Dejan Lovren is willing to ‘force through a move’ to Anfield. That’s pretty big news, especially as he’s only been a Southampton player for a year.
Given that he’s on a long-term contract with The Saints, his current club are still in a position of power here. If they don’t want to sell, they don’t have to. What’s more, there’s no real need for them to sell on the cheap either.
12 months ago The Saints paid Lyon £7m for Dejan Lovren. If The Reds want to get their hands on him, they’ll need to pay considerably more.
But given the state of Liverpool’s defense, I’d argue that this would be a smart move. The Reds conceded 50 Premier League goals last season. They were let down on a number of occasions by their lacklustre defense.
Adding a talented footballer like Dejan Lovren to their ranks could help to fix this issue. He’d certainly be a big improvement on the likes of Kolo Toure. Full speed ahead Brendan!
