Luke ShawBefore David Moyes was given his marching orders, he had a variety of potential transfer targets lined-up. Chief among them were Bayern Munich wild-card, Toni Kroos and Southampton’s marauding full-back Luke Shaw. With Louis Van Gaal now in charge, it’s not clear whether Manchester United will persevere in chasing either target.

Luckily, The Mirror recently tried to fill the gaps. They claim that Manchester United and Southampton are ready to re-open talks over a potential deal for Luke Shaw. With Mauricio Pochettino now at Tottenham, I wonder if The Saints are going to find it more difficult to keep hold of their best players.

Along with Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw is probably Southampton’s brightest and best. At just 18-years-old he’s already got plenty of Premier League experience and an England cap. Getting so much experience at a young age (and earning great reviews) is only going to help him in the long run.

He’s clearly got a massive future ahead of him at club level and international level. It’s smart for Manchester United to get in on this at an early stage.

But he certainly won’t come cheap. Nor will this deal be easy to close. The Red Devils have already had a £27m bid for Luke Shaw rejected. It’s just not clear how much he’s going to cost Manchester United.

Manchester United’s first-choice left-back option, Patrice Evra, is now 33-years-old. He’s already beginning to show signs of diminishing returns. It’s not surprising to hear that Louis Van Gaal is already hunting down a replacement.

And as replacements go, Luke Shaw is surely the best possible option. I’m not sure that any other player in the Premier League has as much potential as he does. He has the kind of potential that’s worth spending big on.

Of course, United need to save some cash to sign a couple of centre-backs and wingers, but they’re rumoured to have access to a massive transfer kitty this year. Fingers crossed that Luke Shaw is one of the first players through the door.

What’s your take? Should The Reds make a move for Luke Shaw? how much is he worth to Southampton?
