It’s still difficult to believe that Liverpool came so close to winning the Premier League last season. After starting slowly, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge soon started to exert their influence and The Reds rocketed up the Premier League table with lightening speed.
Unfortunately, their excellent attack was not matched by their defense. This proved to be their undoing. The Reds lacklustre defense is probably the reason why Brendan Rodgers and co. walked away empty handed last season.
And that’s why The Reds have been linked to a number of different defensive options over the last month or so. One of these individuals is Sevilla’s top class left-back, Alberto Moreno.
The Mirror even claim that Liverpool have even submitted a ‘formal offer’ for the Spaniard. The deal could end up setting the club back £20m.
The diminutive full-back has played 45 games in total for Sevilla and has impressed with his work-rate, pace and attacking verve. The fact that he’s just 21-years-old makes him an even more exciting prospect. He’s already earned 3 caps for the Spanish international side. Not bad, eh?
The good news for Liverpool fans is that the aforementioned source suggests that Sevilla are willing to let go of Moreno for the right price. Whether or not the deal will get done before the World Cup is another matter.
Whether it happens now, or in the future, Moreno will prove to be an excellent addition to Liverpool’s squad. £20m is a lot of money, but in this case, it looks like it’ll be money well spent.
Whether it’ll help Brendan Rodgers’ side to compete for the Premier League title again next season remains to be seen. One things for sure: Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United are all going to strengthen significantly.
Signing a player like Alberto Moreno will help The Reds keep pace, but it may not quite get them across the finishing line in a winning position.
