Ogenyi OnaziAfter a season where Liverpool have displayed their attacking credentials on a near weekly basis, they’d do well to come back next term with a better rounded squad. After all if The Reds were as good at defending as they are attacking, they’d have had the Premier League title sewn up some time ago.

It’s not just the back four that needs to be assessed (though I hope that Brendan Rodgers has some plans in this department). The Reds could also use a little more steel in their midfield.

With slight players like Philippe Coutinho and Joe Allen scampering around, causing havoc, surely the next logical step is to provide them with an enforcer type. These young, technically gifted individuals need protection, which is a good excuse to bring in a talented defensive midfielder.

These brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are hunting Lazio’s tough-tackling midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi. The Nigerian international has risen to prominence in Serie A over the last couple of years.

The 21-year-old is quick along the turf, covers a lot of ground and loves to make his presence felt by opposition players. He’s also always there providing cover, sticking his foot in, nibbling away at those on the ball and trying to win back possession. He’s not too shabby on the ball either. He excels at the kind of quick short passes that Liverpool have made their trademark this season.

I can’t help but feel that he’d be an excellent fit for The Reds. It looks like Onazi thinks this himself. Check out these quotes from The Nigerian: “Liverpool? They are a huge team and are attractive to any footballer. I could see myself playing for them. I would jump at the chance.”

He’s not mincing his words is he? The youngster’s keen on a move to Anfield and Liverpool have a clear and present need in this area of the pitch. As such, it looks like a good fit. Onazi looks custom built for the Premier League and I’m sure he’d help Brendan Rodgers to come back even stronger next season.

What’s your take? Is Ogenyi Onazi a good choice for The Reds? What other options should they consider?
