Should Manchester United really spend big on this £35m star?

Thomas MullerIt’s been quite a season for Manchester United, who have had to suffer through one horror show after another. I’m sure the hope was that David Moyes’ exit would stop the rot, but last weekend’s defeat to Sunderland shows just how deep the problems lie.

The Red Devils are now a side that’s in desperate need of a fresh start. More so than any other side in the Premier League, they need the summer to roll by, so that they can start bringing in the kind of players they need to turn things around.

The next transfer window could well prove to be the club’s most important in living memory. It could be what allows them to keep their ‘big club’ status, or what lets that moniker slip for good.

That’s why I was surprised to see The Metro run an article that suggested that Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller would be a waste of Manchester United’s money. Talk about slapping away the hand of charity. Thomas Muller is one of the most understated, effective and plain deadly footballers in the world. He’d walk into just about any team and it’s foolish to think things would be any different at Manchester United.

Of course, the same source also claims that Sami Khedira, Edinson Cavani and Dante would be a waste of money, so perhaps we should take their claims with a pinch of salt. They note that Muller could be available for £35m, but claim that spending anything over £22m would not represent value for money. That, in my book, is laughable and shows a strange lack of understanding of the market value of Bayern Munich’s current crop.

This season Muller has scored 25 goals. Last year he scored 23. That’s a remarkable return for a midfielder. That’s why his price-tag is so high.

Yes, Muller is never going to be the kind of player who takes opposition defenders on and uses his technique to beat his man. But he’s so damn intelligent and he positions himself so well, that he’ll get by just fine in the Premier League.

If he really is available for £35m, I’d snap him up. That’s less than it cost Manchester United to sign Juan Mata, but I have the feeling that he’ll prove to be doubly effective.

What’s your take? Would it be a mistake to spend big on Thomas Muller?
