Could Manchester United snap up this Argentine legend for free?

Esteban CambiassoWith Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving Manchester United this summer, the club is losing two of its most experienced footballers. Losing two players in the same position is always difficult for a club to handle, but when they’re players of this level of quality, it can be crippling.

The Red Devils need to be proactive in the way that they handle this situation. Moreover, I can’t help but feel that they need to go after an experienced defender or two to help steady the ship. They need more players at the back who have been there, done that and won the trophies.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are in the market for Inter Milan star Esteban Cambiasso. The 33-year-old legend has been at the San Siro for a decade, but it looks like he’s set for a new challenge. Could the veteran defensive midfielder be the perfect fit for an ailing Manchester United side?

Given that he’d be available as a free transfer, this is hardly a massive risk for The Red Devils to take. Inter’s Director of Sport, Piero Ausilio recently spoke to The Press about his club’s decision to let Cambiasso go. Check out the quotes:

“I speak to Cambiasso every day in an informal manner, as he is a friend. Today there was a difficult moment between him and I, as we talked about the future. Due to reasons of strategy, renewal and an Inter for young players, he will not be confirmed in the squad. We will not propose a new contract”.

Inter are focusing on youth, whilst United need an experience injection. This could prove to be a handy coincidence for The Red Devils.

There’s certainly no doubting Cambiasso’s credentials. He’s played 424 games for Inter Milan, 65 for Real Madrid and 52 for Argentina. ‘Experienced’ doesn’t really cut it. He’s the consummate defensive midfielder and will provide invaluable protection for centre-backs Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

He knows where to position himself and how to win the ball back. He’s a fighter, a winner and a leader. He also chips in with a decent number of goals for a defender. I can’t help but feel that he’s exactly what Manchester United need.

What’s your take? Could The Red Devils really be about to get their hands on Esteban Cambiasso?

Would love to see him (CAMBIASSO) and XAVI play for united …. it would be awesome them to see as UNITED players …. shaw, kroos, fabregas, (cambiasso/xavi), rafael, smalling, evans, mata, januzaj, rooney, persie, kagawa, wilson, lawrence, de gea and some very young talented players … no need to overload the team by extra puchases.
