Wilfried BonyNow that Arsenal have won their first piece of silverware in nine years, they’re in a fairly privileged position. They’ve got the monkey off the back and can now go back into the transfer market as a more enticing proposition. In the past, big-money footballers may have avoided Arsenal, due to a fear that they wouldn’t be able to win anything in North London. I’m just not sure that’s the case any more.

In a recent article published by The Mirror, Wilfried Bony, Swansea City’s star striker admitted that whilst he was happy at his current club, he could be tempted away by a move to a ‘big club’.

I think it’s fair to say that Arsenal, with their world-class manager, budget, Champions League status and new-found silverware winning tendencies, are a ‘big club’. Perhaps they’re the kind of club that could convince Bony to leave his current surroundings and embark on a new challenge?

With The Mirror noting that Bony is ‘a target’ for The Gunners, it’ll certainly be interesting to see how this one progresses.

Having arrived from Vitesse Arnhem last summer as part of a £12m move, he’s somehow managed to make an instant impact in the Premier League. Whilst strikers like Roberto Soldado have struggled to make the transition into British football, Bony has excelled.

The Ivorian Coast international (with 23 caps and 8 goals to his name) seems to be custom built for Premier League action. He’s tall (6 foot), stocky, reads the game well and has knack for finding the back of the net.

During his time at Vitesse he scored a remarkable 53 goals in 73 games. Whilst The Eredivisie isn’t exactly known for its quality, this return more than proves his ability. The fact that he’s repeated the feat on British shores is all the more encouraging. He’s played 48 times this season and scored 25 goals. I think it’s fair to say that he’s Swansea City’s MVP.

Last summer, The Gunners spent some time chasing another Swansea City forward, Michu. It looks like they’ve now changed tact. For my money, this is a positive step forward for the club. Let’s just hope that Wenger can drag this deal across the line.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners swoop in for Wilfried Bony?
