Would this £8m Barca boy be a good Manchester United signing?

Alex SongOne of the most surprising aspects of Manchester United’s shabby season has been the way that their big money signings, Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata have failed to have any major impact at Old Trafford.

Sure, Juan Mata has had the occasional good game, but I think it’s fair to say that fans will have expected more from their £37m signing. The same can be said of Fellaini, who really hasn’t offered much of anything at all this year.

Perhaps they’ll both improve next season once they’ve got a full pre-season behind them (though this will be disturbed by the  World Cup), but I can’t help but feel that Manchester United need to be pro-active here. I’m worried that whoever takes charge at Old Trafford will look to double down in this area (by bringing new signings in), rather than dealing with the issue at hand.

The Red Devils don’t provide their midfielders with enough protection. I can’t help but feel that Manchester United need a midfielder enforcer type to give their technical talents more time on the ball, more breathing room and space to roam further up the field. This is one of those weird cases where making a defensive signing could free Manchester United up in an attacking sense.

This brings me to [football] direct‘s claim that Barcelona have offered Manchester United their defensive midfielder, Alex Song. That’s right, the same Alex Song who used to work his magic for The Gunners back in the day.

Unfortunately the Cameroonian international has never really managed to break into Barca’s first team and could be available for as little as £8m as a result.

I’m sure United fans will scoff at this particular rumour, but Song may actually represent a pretty good fit. He’s physical, he’s tough and he’s athletic, but he’s also the kind of defensive midfielder who’s capable of contributing in an attacking sense too.

This is good news for Manchester United who are predominantly a counter-attacking side.

Song also has a pretty good connection with Manchester United’s Robin Van Persie, having provided him with a few spectacular assists during their Arsenal days.

Besides, at just £8m, this deal isn’t exactly a big gamble, is it?

What’s your take? Should Manchester United take Barcelona up on their offer?
