Why this £31m man is the perfect fit for Arsenal:

|

Diego CostaGiven Arsenal’s current need, I’m surprised that Arsene Wenger hasn’t been linked more strongly to Atletico Madrid’s jaw-droppingly good striker, Diego Costa. Just about every other European club has, so why shouldn’t The Gunners get involved?

Olivier Giroud, the big ballsy Frenchman has had a lot of responsibility thrust on his shoulders this season and though he’s coped reasonably well, it’s clear that he needs some help. Another season like this one will probably break him. He has looked like he’s on the edge of exhaustion for the 20 or so games. The man needs a break.

And given how close Arsenal have come to winning the Premier League title this season (they stayed on top of the table for longer than any other team), it’s clear that a signing or two in this area could essentially propel the club to further levels of success — particularly if the players brought in are world class.

Diego Costa certainly ticks that box. The Brazilian born, Spanish international has played 49 games this season and found the back of the net 36 times. That’s 16 more goals than he scored last term. It’s also 14 more goals than Giroud has scored during the same time period.

When you combine his goal-scoring nous with his comfort on the ball, his technique and his ability to bring midfielders into play, it’s clear why he’s such a catch. He’s the kind of player who could work wonders for this Arsenal side. He may just be the club’s missing link.

As it happens, The Mirror claim that Arsenal are readying an ‘audacious move’ for the Brazilian this summer. It’s thought that he has a £31m release clause written into his Madrid contract and that The Gunners will try and trigger it when the transfer window re-opens.

This should be massively exciting news for Arsenal fans. He’s exactly the kind of player that the club needs and what’s more, he’s available at the kind of price that The Gunners won’t balk at any more (they spent considerably more on Mesut Ozil last summer). Now Arsene Wenger just needs to persuade Diego that The Emirates is the right place for him!

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Diego Costa? Will the competition for his signature be too much?
