Alexandre LacazetteArsenal have saved some of their best football for the last few weeks of the season. Their victories over Hull City, West Ham and more recently Newcastle United, have been as comprehensive as they come. The Gunners are closing out the season as they begun: full of beans. It’s a shame that the middle part had all the impetus of a damp squib.

Whilst most people tend to put Arsenal’s failures down to a the club’s injury crisis (players like Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil have been out for long stretches of the season), I can’t help but feel that they’ve been let down by a lack of options upfront. Even when everybody’s fit, there’s just not enough competition in this part of the pitch.

Olivier Giroud has played 53 games this season and approximately 3,945 minutes worth of action. In all honesty, the Frenchman has looked knackered since about minute 1,000.

In other words, Arsenal could use another signing or two in this department. They need to bring in a striker who can offer Arsene Wenger a bit more flexibility.  This brings me to The Sun‘s claim that Arsenal have made a transfer target of Lyon’s £10m rated striker, Alexandre Lacazette.

At just 22-years-old, Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette is having quite a remarkable season. He’s made a total of 50 appearances for the Ligue 1 side in all competitions and has found the back of the net 21 times. He’s also chipped in with 8 assists. Not too shabby for a young whippersnapper, eh?

I’m sure some Arsenal fans will be a little concerned. A decent record in Ligue 1 is not evidence of a world-class striker. It’s only when he moves to a top league that Lacazette will truly start to prove himself.

But if Arsene Wenger is really interested, it must be because he sees something special in the youngster. The Professor is no mug. He knows French football very well and won’t sign anybody on the basis of one good season.

What really appeals about Lacazette is his pace. In this regard, he’s the exact opposite of Olivier Giroud. It’ll be great to see Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey feeding through balls into players who can actually run onto them.

What’s your take? Is Alexandre Lacazette the answer for Arsenal?

Does Oliver Giroud ring any bells? One good season at Montpellier?
