Yevhen KonoplyankaManchester United fans love to get one over on their old rivals, Liverpool. Unfortunately, last season didn’t provide too many opportunities for this to occur. The Red Devils finished 7th in the Premier League table, 20 points behind Liverpool, who finished a close 2nd. The Reds also boasted a +30 goal difference over Manchester United and scored 37 more goals in total.

Liverpool enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent times, whilst Manchester United have entered a period of transition. Bragging rights are well and truly in Liverpool’s corner.

But whether this will remain the case in the future remains to be seen. Perhaps new United boss, Louis Van Gaal can get one over on The Reds by beating them in the transfer market.

The Mirror claim that Manchester United are ready to ‘square up’ to Liverpool over the pursuit of £12m Dnipro FC winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka. Fight!

Brendan Rodgers has been in the market for the Ukrainian wing-wizard for quite some time. He tried to sign Konoplyanka on deadline day of the last January transfer window, but the deal fell through. Ever since there has been speculation as to whether the Liverpool boss would move back in for the talented wing-man when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

I’m sure that most Liverpool fans have their fingers crossed that he will. The 24-year-old has made 34 appearances in the top Ukrainian League this season and has found the back of the net 13 times. He’s also chipped in with a number of assists and his build-up play has been singled out for praise. He’s lightning quick and I’m sure he’d be a real handful for Premier League defenses.

And that’s why I’m not surprised that The Red Devils are interested. They currently lack threat down the wings (Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young seem to have been neutered over the last year or so) and Konoplyanka looks like a good solution. What’s more, with his £12m price-tag, he won’t break the bank.

If it does come down to a head-to-head battle between the two clubs, United are sure to win out. They have more financial firepower and may still have a little more allure to players like Konoplyanka. Could Manchester United be about to turn the table on their old rivals?

What’s your take? Should Louis Van Gaal rival Brendan Rodgers for the signature of Yevhen Konoplyanka?

Try an keep up he has already said he would stay with Dnipro before joining a side that IS NOT in the CL.

If the player lacks ambition united might get him. Or if BR has decided that he wants to look elsewhere.

I’m a red, but all’s fair in love and war, [so to speak]. BR has to get his Terry Venables salesman’s talents out. Just send him vids of man u and lfc last season. Football is all about now and we are the choice team.

I feel LFC and Brendan Rodgers have switched interest in Konoplyanka to some other areas but that could be a huge mistake. Kono is an all-round player that fits what BR needs. The process to sign him started last winter window but was not completed for technical reasons. Now there is enough time to conclude the transaction and bring the “Ukraine-Messi” to Anfield.

BR should remain focused and define what the club really need. I see Kono as a very good addition to the side if LFC sign him. The only alternative that will be rewarding to Liverpool IMO is Alexis Sanchez of FCB. If we cannot get Sanchez to complement the ever-improving Sterling on the wings, then Konoplyanka has to be signed. He is a great player (can dribble and fire long-range shots) and the price tag is reasonable considering LFC’s budget.
