Should Liverpool give up on signing Xherdan Shaqiri?

Xherdan ShaqiriIt’s been a thrilling season for Liverpool fans who have watched their club come so close to the big time, only to fall at the last hurdle. At one stage The Reds looked like certain Premier League title winners, but their leaky defense (and some stubborn resistance from Jose Mourinho) meant that the champagne would have to be kept on ice — at least for another year.

Whilst fingers will (and should) be pointed at The Reds defense, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Brendan Rodgers look to increase his attacking options this summer. I’m sure he’ll look at the likes of Victor Moses (who’s on loan from Chelsea) and wonder what he could have achieved this season if he had some more threat down the flanks.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool’s long-term transfer target, Xherdan Shaqiri has little interest in a move to Anfield. They claim that the Swiss international is keen to earn a first team role at Bayern Munich and is not prepared to give up just yet.

Since moving to Bayern Munich two summers ago, Shaqiri has made 65 appearances many of which were as a substitute. Despite his limited game  time he has still managed to find the back of the net 15 times. He’s still clearly developing, despite all the challenges that he’s facing at the moment.

It’s worth noting that Shaqiri’s only 22-years-old, so what’s he’s already achieved with his career is quite remarkable. I have little doubt that he’ll make it at Bayern in the long-run, but I’m sure he could be tempted to move to another club were they to offer him regular game-time and a nice pay-cheque.

With reports suggesting that Xherdan Shaqiri is still keen to prove himself in the Bundesliga, it’s up to Liverpool to re-frame his situation and persuade him otherwise. Why wouldn’t an exciting young attacking player want to join the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling at Liverpool? Who wouldn’t want to be a first team regular playing alongside Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard?

I don’t believe that this deal is dead just yet. If Bayern decide they’re willing to sell up, The Reds could get their man yet.

What’s your take? Is it time for Liverpool to give up on Xherdan Shaqiri?
