Bastian SchweinsteigerI’m beginning to lose track of the number of Bayern Munich stars that have been linked to Manchester United over the last six-or-so months. It’s difficult to understand where it’s all coming from.

Yes, the German champions currently have some of the world’s best footballers among their ranks, but most of their players are also pretty settled. You would be though, wouldn’t you, if were sweeping aside all the opposition and picking up a decent wage in the meanwhile?

Over the last few months, The Red Devils have picked up links to Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben, Javi Martinez and Mario Gotze. According to The Metro, we can add another name to this list: that of the German’s vice-captain, Bastian Schweinsteiger. Manchester United just can’t seem to help themselves, can they?

Manchester United’s new boss, Louis Van Gaal knows Schweinsteiger well from his time at the Allianz Arena. As it happens, the rest of the world knows him pretty well too. He has made 473 appearances for Bayern Munich after all. The man is a living legend.

Oh and Manchester United fans will remember that he scored in Bayern’s quarter-final victory over their club last season. What’s more, The Red Devils spent long stretches of last season crying out for a player like Bastian Schweinsteiger. In a season where Manchester United were at their least effective and managed to display no passion whatsoever, the German would have proven to be the perfect tonic.

At 29-years-old, he may not be a long-term option, but he is the kind of player who can come in and make an instant impact at Old Trafford. What’s more, I think it’s fair to say that Schweinsteiger still has two-or-three more years left at the very top level.

Having been a one-club man for his entire career, Schweinsteiger may feel that he’s ready for a new challenge. He’s won everything there is to win in the Bundesliga. Moving to the Premier League looks like the next logical step.

Of course, convincing Bayern Munich won’t be easy. I’d wager that Manchester United would have to break their £37.1m transfer record. Just imagine the statement that would make.

What’s your take? Can The Red Devils really compete for Bastian Schweinsteiger?

“Manchester United, they just can’t help themselves can they”. That’s a direct quote from your piece but you should stop your sarcasm and shut up because not one of these fairy tales have been initiated from the club. They are all (without exception) all cooked up by people such as yourselves on these endless crap sites. And then you have the brass neck to poke fun at Utd for something that has absolutely nothing to do with them. Tell me this, how can any club stop all the rubbish that is said on their behalf in the media? it is you who cant help yourselves, get a grip.
