Sead KolasinacFew things improve the mood more than a four-nil victory (except, I suppose a five/six/seven-nil victory). Manchester United had been in crisis mode, but since Ryan Giggs took over as manager, things have started to get better. Saturday’s 4-0 victory was particularly impressive. In fact, The Red Devils were beginning to look like themselves once again.

But this doesn’t mean that Manchester United’s problems will magically disappear. In particular, it strikes me that whoever takes charge of the club in the long-term is going to face a major defensive headache. With Nemanja Vidic moving on and the future’s of Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra uncertain, The Red Devils could be set to lose their three most experienced defenders.

Whatever happens, Manchester United will have to do some recruitment in this area when the summer roles by. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are in the market for Schalke’s left-back, Sead Kolasinac. The source suggests that The Red Devils have already tabled a bid and now they’re just waiting to see what his decision is.

The player himself has even commented on the speculation: “Yes, I have offer from Manchester United. But, I will not hurry with the decision [over my future]. I have to see what Schalke think about it.”

Kolasinac is just 20-years-old, so it looks like Manchester United are looking to recruit young in this area of the pitch (after all, their other main left-back target is Luke Shaw, who’s only 18-years-old).

Since making his Bundesliga debut in September 2012, the Bosnian has made 37 appearances for Schalke. He’s also got two caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He’s known for his attacking flair, his endless energy and his excellent crossing ability. He’s also a diligent defender.

He’s not quite as good as a player like Patrice Evra, but he has the potential to be. If he continues to develop at the rate he has been over the last 12 months, then he’s set for big things. This may be a case where it makes sense for United to try and convince Evra to stay for one more year, but either way, signing Sead Kolasinac looks like a smart move.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United make a move for Schalke’s left-back?
