Mateo KovacicWith Brendan Rodgers taking Liverpool in an extremely exciting direction, there’s a lot of good feeling around Anfield at the moment.

The Reds are on the up in a major way and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were to attract some big fish in this summer’s transfer market.

The Papers certainly haven’t been slow to link Liverpool to all and sundry. Take, for instance, The Metro‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is chasing yet another exciting young midfielder. This time round it’s Inter Milan’s Mateo Kovacic.

Since winning two titles with Dinamo Zagreb, the 19-year-old has made 44 appearances for Milan. That’s a decent amount of experience for a player that’s so young. The deep-lying midfielder is known for his versatility, his ability to buy himself time and space on the ball and his quick, accurate passing.

He certainly wouldn’t look out of place playing alongside the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson.

As it happens, the Liverpool rumours seem to have cropped up due to the Croatian being unsettled at Inter Milan. The Metro even claim that he’s fallen out with his manager Walter Mazzarri and carry quotes from his agent:

“Everybody is confused as to why Mateo is not playing. Is there a row with Mazzarri? I can’t say a lot, but he is not happy.”

The fact that he’s not willing to deny the rumours is telling. It’s clear that there’s something going on here. Either way, the player’s unhappy so now’s a particularly good time to target him.

He’s primed and ready to be tempted away from his club. If The Reds can offer him a decent financial incentive, I’m sure he’ll jump ship without too much consideration.

This would be considered a big victory for The Reds. Brendan Rodgers is in the process of assembling one of the most exciting, attacking sides in Europe. Whilst Kovacic still has some developing to do, he’ll fit into Liverpool’s midfield very nicely.

I’m sure he’d love the opportunity to play alongside a newly refreshed Steven Gerrard in the last years of the Liverpool legend’s career.

The player is thought to be available for just £8m, so he won’t exactly break the bank. If Brendan Rodgers is genuinely interested, there’s every reason to believe that this deal could go ahead.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool continue to chase starlets, or is it time to make some marquee signings?

If he has what it takes to succeed in liverpool, then what are we waiting for? Lets snap him up.

If this is a starlet, he certainly represents much better value and potential than any “marquee”. Fed-up with overpriced has-beens. Time to look at fresh talent. A few more young stars like Sterling, Flanagan and Coutinho will certainly keep us in the running for a good few years to come
