Jerome BoatengFor the early parts of this season, Liverpool’s midfield was subject to a fair amount of criticism. The claim was that the likes of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, The Reds’ illustrious strikers, were carrying the team and that Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson just weren’t pulling their weight.

Some were even claiming that Steven Gerrard was ‘past it’ and that it was time to bring somebody new in.

Well, The England international has certainly been proving them wrong, hasn’t he? He’s currently playing some of the best football of his career and he’s been ably supported by Henderson, who looks like he could develop into a player of equal importance over the coming years.

In other words, The Reds midfielders are starting to match their strikers pound-for-pound. The only part of the team that doesn’t seem to be fully pulling its weight is the defence.

Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are both getting on in years. Kolo Toure has proven to be a liability. Mamadou Sahko has spent large stretches of the season out injured. If Brendan Rodgers is looking to compete on multiple fronts next season, then this is an area of the squad that needs assessing.

It looks like he has some fairly ambitious targets. Take The Metro’s claim that he’s in the market for Bayern Munich centre-back/full-back, Jerome Boateng. The versatile defender recently signed a new contract extension with the Bundesliga leaders that will keep him tied down until 2018.

He’s more or less a first time regular for Bayern, where he has made 117 appearances over 3 seasons. It’s going to take a massive offer on Liverpool’s part to convince his current team to sell.

You also have to wonder whether Boateng would want to leave the best team in the world to join a team that’s still finding its feet among the European elite. Having said that, The Reds are going places and I’m sure that Boateng would be tempted to join a team that’s showcasing such naked ambition and drive.

Now the waiting game begins. It’s time to see whether Liverpool have the money and the willingness to make a deal like this happen.

What’s your take? Can Liverpool really compete for Jerome Boateng?

the question is, should Liverpool compete….NO imo…Lovren is the better defensive boss…

Boateng has faced dangerous opposition in how many of his 117 games? 3? in this team even Demichelis would win a CL-Medal…
