Luke ShawThe Red Devils really do have their work cut out for them this summer. As if this season hasn’t been hard enough, many key members of Manchester United’s squad will be moving on this summer.

Some will be sold, others will retire and others will reach the end of their Manchester United contract. The club’s defense is in a particularly precarious position. We already know that Nemanja Vidic will join Inter Milan in the summer. Rio Ferdinand could well follow him through Old Trafford’s exit door. Then there’s Patrice Evra who is also approaching the end of his United contract.

These three have a combined 28 year’s worth of experience of playing for Manchester United. It’s not easy to see how David Moyes is going to be able to replace them. Sure they’re all getting on in years and are beginning to look past their best, but that doesn’t make the task that’s now facing the club any easier.

The only move left to David Moyes is to spend big in the transfer window. The better players he brings in, the easier the transition will be.

United have been linked to a number of left-backs over the last 6 months or so. Last summer, they went after both Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao. Since then, they’ve been strongly linked to Southampton’s hotly-tipped young full-back, Luke Shaw.

And now The Daily Mail is claiming that ‘Moyes is optimistic’ that he can seal a £25m deal for the Saints’ marauding left-back, despite the interest in the player from both Chelsea and Liverpool.

‘Why is he so confident?’ I hear you ask? Because The Mail also reports that The Saints have a £27m ‘hole’ in their finances and that it’s a major cause of concern for the club at the moment. That’s a pretty big hole, eh? Well the sale of Shaw would certainly go a long way towards plugging this financial gap.

Either way, Shaw would provide a great fit for Manchester United. The pacy full-back has bags of talents and will wind up at a big club eventually. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he ends up at Old Trafford.

What’s your take? Is Luke Shaw the right choice for Manchester United? Will The Saints’ financial situation force them to sell?
