Micah RichardsIt’s been sad to watch Micah Richard’s slowly get squeezed out at the Etihad. The right-back was once one of England’s brightest young talents, with his pace down the flanks, direct running and defensive diligence catching the eye of fans and pundits alike.

Unfortunately, his career has slowed down over the last couple of seasons. He may have spent 13 years with Manchester City (and he’s only 25-years-old!), but he’s pretty much a part-timer at the moment.

His injury record hasn’t helped, but what’s really standing in his way at the moment is the form of Pablo Zabaleta. The Argentine is arguably the best right-back in the Premier League and seems to deliver a top-notch performance each and every week. As such, it’s been very difficult for Richards to sneak back into the first team.

It strikes me that Richards is approaching a pivotal point in his career. His Manchester City contract will expire this summer. He’s already rejected a new five-year deal earlier this season. This means he’ll be a free agent and will have an opportunity to prove himself at another club and revive his ailing career.

Where he’ll end up if anybody’s guess. But according to The Mirror, both AC Milan and Liverpool are interested in City’s forgotten right back. The source suggests that Brendan Rodgers made a loan move for Micah Richards in January, but that it was rejected. The suggestion is that The Reds will move back in for the player this summer, when he’ll be available for free.

Liverpool’s defense is the weakest area of their squad, so it’s good to see Brendan Rodgers making plans for the club’s future. Richards won’t provide an instant fix, but he will help to shore things up significantly. Just adding another body to the back-four will inspire competition, raise levels of motivation and help The Reds to come back even stronger next season.

Besides, Richards deserves another shot at a big club. He’s good enough to make it and I hope Liverpool give him a chance to prove this.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool give Manchester City’s forgotten man a chance? Who else should they look at this summer?
