Federico FazioIf fans have their way, Arsene Wenger is going to be busy in this summer’s transfer window. The Gunners have spent much of this season on top of the Premier League table. Unfortunately, their grip has loosened and Arsenal fans may well be left to dream about what could have been.

So yes, Arsenal came pretty close this season. In the end, however, The Gunners squad just isn’t thick enough to deal with the number of fixtures that pop up throughout the year and all the injuries that they can’t seem to avoid. There’s a way to fix this: keep all your key players (Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, etc) and bring in a few new ones to round out the squad.

Whilst the midfield is pretty well balanced, Arsene Wenger does need to sign a defender and a striker when the transfer window re-opens. They just don’t have enough options in either of these departments. Luckily enough, the transfer rumours have already started to roll in.

According to TalkSPORT, Arsenal are one of a number of clubs that’s currently chasing Sevilla’s highly-regard centre-back, Federico Fazio. Manchester United, Tottenham and Serie A side Fiorentina are also thought to be interested in the 27-year-old. That’s a lot of competition, eh? This player must be the real deal.

Sevilla’s excellent defensive displays have seen them launch a bid for a top four finish in La Liga this season. Fazio has been a key part of this. The Argentine defender is a huge presence (he’s 6 foot 5 inches tall. Imagine him playing alongside Per Mertesacker!), who positions himself well, makes plenty of interceptions and works hard for his team.

He’s  well regarded by his team-mates, fans and pundits alike. He has also been with Sevilla since 2007 so I’d say it’s about time that he got a shot at a big club like Arsenal.

The Gunners have a clear need for somebody like Fazio, so this looks like a good match. GiveMeSport claim hat he could be available for as little as £5.5m That’s a relatively small fee for a player with such pedigree. So let’s hope that Arsenal shove Manchester United and Tottenham aside and surge to the front of the queue.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners move in for Federico Fazio?
