Jackson MartinezThere will be a lot of clubs looking for a striker this summer. In the Premier League, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham all have the need for a top-quality signing in this department. Manchester United, however, despite all their problems this season, are rather well set upfront.

In fact, as forward line-ups go, it’s hard to get better than Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. At certain times this season, The Red Devils have been carried by their flying forwards.

But there are a few issues that may hinder Manchester United in the future. Robin Van Persie, for instance, is now 30-years-old and he’s something of an injury magnet. Danny Welbeck doesn’t seem to be a natural goal-scorer. I’m not sure that Javier Hernandez will remain at the club for much longer.

So yes, David Moyes’ summer priority will be sorting out his defense and adding some threat down the wings, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he also looks at bringing in another striker.

This brings me to Soccerlens‘ claim that Manchester United are currently in the market for FC Porto’s unstoppable striker, Jackson Martinez.

It’s easy to see why Moyes might be interested. The Colombian ace is a natural goal-scorer and he’s been in sensational form for the last three seasons (20 goals for Chiapas in 2011/12, 31 goals for FC Porto last season and 23 goals so far this season). He’s also physically tough, strong in the air and quick along the deck. He has a lot to offer Manchester United, even if the competition in this area of the pitch is already strong.

As Soccerlens also notes, both Chelsea and Arsenal are thought to be monitoring the 27-year-old. Now it’s up to David Moyes and co. to prove that Manchester United are still an ambitious club that is capable of competing for silverware. Failure to do this could result in the player considering other options.

Yes, he strikes me as something of a luxury signing, but as luxury signings go, he’d be a good one. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this one develop.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United pursue Jackson Martinez? Does David Moyes have other priorities?
