Tom CleverleyWatching Manchester United ease to a 4-1 win over Aston Villa was almost like watching a Sir Alex Ferguson side in action. The Red Devils were in control throughout, moving the ball about quickly, creating chances and seizing the moment whenever it arose.

Unfortunately, there have been far too many false dawns this season to herald any kind of ‘return to form’, but United fans will feel relieved that they’re still capable of trotting this kind of performance on their day.

But these days are now all too rare. This Manchester United side are capable of losing to anybody on their day. They’re wildly inconsistent, too defensive and just not direct enough.

There’s a reason why teams like Manchester City and Liverpool have been able to turn-over The Red Devils this season. United just aren’t good enough to compete at the top.

Whilst David Moyes needs to take his fair share of the blame, a few of the players need a reality call too. Some of them just haven’t been performing to the level they can, whilst others just don’t seem cut out for a career at Old Trafford.

Let’s focus on Tom Cleverley, a player who has acted as Manchester United’s scapegoat this season. I don’t think we can fault his application. The 24-year-old works extremely hard, doesn’t hide and tries to be positive. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t have enough end product in his locker.

He reminds me a little of the Aaron Ramsey of a year or two ago. He tends to dawdle on the ball. He attempts passes that he shouldn’t. He slows play down to a snail’s pace. At the moment he’s just not an effective footballer.

So what do we make of The Mirror‘s claim that Everton are willing to offer United £15m for Tom Cleverley in the summer?

It’s an interesting one, because there are still those with their fingers crossed hoping that he’ll come good at Old Trafford (like Aaron Ramsey did at Arsenal). Everton’s evaluation of the player certainly recognises this potential. At the moment, he’s just not worthy of that price-tag, but he may well develop into a player who is.

With United looking to bring in a bunch of new signings this summer, selling Cleverley may become a necessity. Given the current state of the club, David Moyes can’t really afford to gamble. It’s time to bring in players who are already ready to make a difference at Old Trafford. If Tom Cleverley has to make way to make this happen, then so be it!

What’s your take? Should United cash in on Tom Cleverley?
