Luke ShawManchester United fans have been used to disappointment this season. David Moyes has taken his team from one disaster to another, only stopping to make the occasional ill-thought out big money transfer.

Chelsea on the other hand, have had everything more or less their own way all season long. With Jose Mourinho back in charge the Blues are a force to be reckoned with once more. But there are signs that their grip on the title race is beginning to loosen.

The defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend was disastrous. This title-race is particularly slight, so every slip-up counts. I’m sure Mourinho’s kicking himself at this very moment.

But things could be about to get even worse in the near future. The Mirror recently ran an article suggesting that long-term Chelsea target and Southampton star, Luke Shaw, could be set to join Manchester United this summer as part of a £27m deal. Are The Blues about to be beaten to the punch once again?

Given that Luke Shaw is a Chelsea fan, this one should have been fairly easy for Jose Mourinho. All he needed to do was show up, make the young lad feel welcome at Stamford Bridge and get Roman Abramovich to sign a cheque.

Then again, David Moyes is nothing if not ambitious in the transfer market. He’s spent a lot of money on Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata and isn’t afraid to flex United’s financial muscle. Perhaps he’s just been more forthcoming when it comes to negotiating and that’s helped to tempt Luke Shaw away?

Chelsea’s loss is Manchester United’s gain. The 18-year-old Shaw has proven that he’s the real deal this season. He’s got pace, attacking flair, a smart footballing brain and all the qualities he needs to make it at the top of the Premier League.

I’m not sure that he’s the kind of player that will help Manchester United to turn their fortunes around, but he’ll eventually end up being a smart replacement for Patrice Evra. And who knows, if a couple more world-class signings come through the Old Trafford gates, maybe things will start to look up for Manchester United?

What’s your take? Will Chelsea be sad to miss out on this £27m talent?

Shaw is a miss but I think we have a superior target in Ricardo Rodriguez and is far more cheaper. Wait and see
