Liverpool have been interested in Barcelona’s sprightly young winger, Cristian Tello for almost as long as I can remember (my memory goes back approximately 12-18 months). He’s always been viewed as something of a fringe player at the Nou Camp, but at Anfield, there’s a good chance that he’d get more game time and his career could really kick on as a result.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool’s interest in the player continued into this summer and even results in a speculative bid. After all, for all of The Reds’ attacking flair, they still lack a bit of cut-and-thrust down the wings. Aside from Raheem Sterling, who is developing into one of the best young footballers in the world, Liverpool are short of options in this department.
Victor Moses was brought in to add some attacking verve, but I think it’s fair to say that this experiment has been a failure. His loan move will end this summer and he’ll return back to Chelsea.
So what will Brendan Rodgers do? Will he finally act on the club’s clear interest in Cristian Tello? According to The Mirror, the 22-year-old is ready for a change in scenery and may be willing to accept a move to Liverpool. what’s more, with Barca’s transfer ban temporarily postponed, they may be willing to sell if they can bring in a replacement.
Tello made 34 appearances last season, but has only managed 27 this time round. I’m sure he’ll feel that he hasn’t been progressing at Barcelona and this may be the reason he’s looking to jump ship.
Still, his statistics are quite good for a player who often only makes substitute appearances. In 83 games, he’s found the back of the net 20 times. That’s a fine return for a young player. No wonder Liverpool are interested.
There’s no word as to how much he might cost, but with all the chatter suggesting that Brendan Rodgers will have access to a mammoth transfer war-chest this summer, he should fall within Liverpool’s price range. So maybe it’s time for Liverpool to turn their interest into something more concrete.
