Can Arsenal really pull off this swap deal for Seamus Coleman?

Seamus ColemanWith Bacary Sagna’s future looking all the more uncertain by the day, it’s probably high-time for Arsene Wenger to start scouring the transfer market for a new right-back.

It won’t be easy. Sagna has been a key part of this Arsenal side since 2007. He’s been a consistent presence and a consistent performer. During this time he’s made it into two Premier League Teams of the Year. Finding somebody who can be equally reliable (and impressive) may involve spending some serious cash (or a spot of luck).

This brings me to Caught Offside‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market for Everton’s classy right-back Seamus Coleman. This strikes me as a smart move for three reasons: Coleman has just experienced the best season of his career, he’s only 25-years-old and he’s got Premier League experience.

He’s made 38 appearances for The Toffees this season and has somehow managed to sneak his way onto the score-sheet 7 times. That’s an impressive return for a full-back. This season he’s scored more than in his previous  four seasons at Everton combined.

It’s also important to point out that he’s come on defensively as well this season. He covers a lot of ground, positions himself well and isn’t afraid to dive into tackles. He’s a good all rounder and could prove to be the perfect acquisition for Arsenal.

Of course, Everton won’t want to lose him without a fight. Still, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are looking to engineer a swap deal that sees Mikel Arteta move back to Goodison Park in part-exchange for Coleman.

At 32-years-old, Arteta may well fancy one last big contract. He may also fancy an opportunity to play out the final years of his career at the place where he really built his name. In turn, Everton may view Arteta as Gareth Barry Mark II – a big club player brought in to bolster the midfield for a limited period of time.

Whether that’s enough to convince them to sell Coleman is another matter. The Gunners may have to chuck in a considerable amount of cash to make the deal worthwhile from an Everton standpoint. But should Arsene Wenger pull this off, I’m not sure Bacary Sagna’s absence will be felt at all.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners swap Mikel Arteta for Seamus Coleman?
