Should Liverpool snap up this £18m Chelsea star?

Andre SchurrleWhat a season Liverpool are having. Brendan Rodgers has transformed from a David Brent-esque laughing stock into one of the most respected managers in the Premier League. Indeed, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger aside, he’s probably the best manager currently plying their trade in the UK.

But if his reputation is to continue to grow, he’ll need to keep the momentum up. One good season will not suffice – he’ll also need to repeat the feat next year. To do this, he’ll need to sign one or two world-class footballers and round-out his squad.

According to [football] direct, Brendan Rodgers is currently keeping tabs on Chelsea winger, Andre Schurrle. The £18m rated German has enjoyed a mixed-bag of a first season with the Blues making 33 appearances and scoring 7 goals. That’s a fairly decent return, but the aforementioned source suggests that Schurrle is somewhat dissatisfied with the lack of regular action he’s currently receiving.

The last time Liverpool bought a player from Chelsea (not counting Victor Moses, who’s only at the club on loan), they landed Daniel Sturridge who has arguably been Brendan Rodger’s best signing. The former Blues star has scored a remarkable 34 goals in 44 games since moving to Anfield. He’s one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League and has even managed to make a name for himself whilst playing in the shadow of Luis Suarez.

It’s worth remembering: Daniel Sturridge barely got a look in at Stamford Bridge. Since moving to Liverpool, he has seriously kicked his career up a gear. Perhaps the same would happen to Andre Schurrle, were he to make the same switch this summer.

With regular football, Schurrle could soon develop into the footballer we know that he’s capable of becoming. He’s just 23-years-old and he’s already verging on being a world-class footballer. With a year’s worth of Premier League action under his belt, he’s going to come back even stronger. Next year could be a big year for Schurrle, especially if he opts to move to a club that will give him the backing he deserves.

£18m is a lot of money, but Liverpool are an ambitious club. Here’s hoping that Brendan Rodgers is capable of making another big deal happen.

What’s your take? Can the Reds compete for Andre Schurrle? Will Jose Mourinho sell to a title rival?

Do we really need any more wingers? Midfield and defence should be priorities.

I can’t believe how this story has suddenly appeared. Schurrle has only been at Chel$ki for 5 minutes and is just starting to get into their team. Why would they sell him? :-/ And why would they sell him to Liverpool. It’s one thing to move someone on to a rival if they throw loads more money at Chel$ki, like for Mata, but to give them only what they paid, I doubt it, especia;;y will Liverpool being so close to Chel$ki this season.

Liverpool are in most need of Defenders, though if Suarez moves they will need to replace him with scoring attacking players to make up the shortfall in goals.
