Toni Kroos 2Manchester United got a nasty shock last week, as the club’s plans to sign the talented German midfielder, Toni Kroos were seemingly blasted into smithereens. After United secured what was probably the best result of their season against Bayern Munich, Kroos told the Press:

“It is a beautiful stadium. But I belong to Bayern Munich and that’s good.” (Source: The Mirror)

Ouch! To make matters worse, Bayern Munich’s chairman, Karl-Heinz Remmenigge made the German’s position completely clear:

“[Kroos] will certainly play at Bayern next year.”

It all seems pretty clear cut, doesn’t it? They player’s happy (at least on the face of things) and his club doesn’t want to sell. There’s little that Manchester United can really do in this situation.

But I think it’s worth noting that Kroos was simply being polite when he was asked about potentially playing for Manchester United. He was paying the club that pays his wages the respect they deserve. He was not ruling out a move to Old Trafford in the future.

In fact, The Mirror claim that Manchester United haven’t given up just yet. They even claim that The Red Devils are willing to launch a massive £40m bid for the German midfielder. That’s a staggering fee. It’d set a new record for the club, given that it’s approximately £3m more than David Moyes spent on Juan Mata.

Kroos is also going to demand high wages. In other words, this deal will set Manchester United back a fortune. If this doesn’t qualify as ‘showing ambition’, then I don’t know what does.

With Kroos’ Munich contract set to expire in the summer of 2015, an offer of this nature will cause them a real headache. Yes, they won’t want to lose such a talented footballer, but they’ll also want to cash-in before he leaves the club on a free.

It would be foolish for Manchester United to give up just yet. This transfer battle isn’t over. If David Moyes continues to probe, he may just land the player he’s after.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United still sign Toni Kroos? Is £40m a fair evaluation of the player?
