Yevhen KonoplyankaLiverpool may be flying high at the moment, but think back, if you will, to the January transfer window. At this stage in the season everything wasn’t going The Reds way. At that stage in the season, even a top four finish looked unlikely. What’s more, Brendan Rodgers wasn’t particularly successful in the transfer market.

The Reds spent a lot of time and effort chasing Ukranian winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka. Unfortunately Brendan Rodgers was unable to drag a deal over the line before 11pm on deadline day.

As it happens, the failure to secure this fleet-footed winger has had little effect on Liverpool’s season. Whilst Arsenal’s failure to sign anybody has seen them drop out of the title race, The Reds approach doesn’t seem to do them any harm whatsoever. With Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scoring goals for fun, this Liverpool team doesn’t seem to need any further attacking inspiration.

But next season will be different. The Reds will be competing in the Champions League (unless something goes seriously wrong in the club’s remaining games), will expect to go further in the Cup competitions and will need to be more consistent throughout the year. All this is going to require a better rounded squad. In other words, Liverpool are going to need to go back in for players like Dnipro FC’s Yevhen Konoplyanka.

As luck would have it, The Mirror recently carried a quote from Konoplyanka’s agent James Lippett, who had tweeted: “En route to Liverpool”. His trip to Merseyside is either a massive coincidence, or he’s there to help get his client a move to Anfield.

There certainly seems to be some truth to all the rumours linking Yevhen with a Premier League move. The pacey wing-man has already proven himself at International level and I’d love to see him get a chance on British shores. He’s got no shortage of talent and I’ve little doubt that he’d make it big.

Let’s just hope that his £16m price-tag doesn’t stand in the way of a deal. Full steam ahead Brendan!

What’s your take? Should Liverpool finally wrap up a deal for Yevhen Konoplyanka?
