Should Spurs snap up this Man City superstar?

James MilnerJames Milner has always looked like an outlier at Manchester City. After years playing and excelling at clubs like Newcastle United and Aston Villa, the England international found himself with the Sky Blues, just as the side received its cash-injection from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

With the amount of money that’s been pumped into Manchester City’s squad over the last three years, it’s would have been easy enough for Milner to get squeezed out. But despite all the talent that’s been brought in, Milner remains a prominent figure in this team. He’s made 101 appearances over the last 3 seasons, which is pretty impressive given the circumstances.

The fact that his name continues to appear on the team-sheet is largely due to his work-ethic, his pace on the ball, his direct attacking nature and his willingness to support his team-mates. He’s got a reputation for being ‘boring’ and it is true that he’s not exactly a flair player like the Samir Nasri’s and Jesus Navas’s of this world. But on his day he can be sublimely effective and can turn a game about on its head.

You don’t hang around at the Etihad for this long unless there’s something a little special about you. Oh and don’t forget that he’s also made 45 appearances for the England international team. Put him down all you like, but he’ll keep popping back up and re-entering the conversation.

This bring’s me to The Metro‘s claim that Spurs have been sniffing around the England midfielder and are readying a summer bid. With just a year left on his Manchester City contract, they’re in a good position to force his current club to sell at a reasonable price.

At 28-years-old, Milner has reached a pivotal point in his career. His next contract will likely be the last major contract that he signs. If he stays at Man City, he may well pick up a healthy wage, but game time would not be guaranteed.

If he moved to White Hart Lane, there’s a good chance he’d be a first team regular for the foreseeable future. He’d also be a part of a side that’s working its way up the Premier League table and still holds a good chance of earning Champions League football next season.

It’d be a step down in one respect and a step up in another. It’ll be interesting to see what decision he makes.

What’s your take? Would you like to see James Milner move to Tottenham?
