Roberto FirminioWe’re at the business end of the season and yet the papers are still obsessing over what’s going to happen during the summer transfer window. For most of us, it seems impossible to think that far ahead. There’s still so much Cup action, Premier League action and European action to even entertain the thought of summer signings.

But this may not be the case for Manchester United fans. Despite his best efforts, David Moyes has managed to drive this once great club into the ground this season.

As things currently stand, they’re 6th in the Premier League table and well out of the title race. With Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all performing well, even a top four finish looks like an impossibility. What’s more, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Olympiakos has them clinging on for dear life in the Champions League. With no Cups left to compete for, what do Manchester United have left?

I guess their only option is to look towards the transfer window. After all, if David Moyes makes some smart decisions in the summer, he’ll be able to transform the fortunes of this ailing side. This ship needs steadying and if the Manchester United top brass spend enough money, they may be able to stop the club from sinking under the weight of expectation.

This brings me to a story recently ran by The Mirror that suggests Manchester United and Liverpool will go head-to-head for the signature of Hoffenheim’s highly-regarded midfielder, Roberto Firmino when the transfer window re-opens.

Firmino is a 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who has risen to prominence since being dropped from the first team in November 2011 for showing up late for training. Since then the Brazilian has gone from strength-to-strength, demonstrating his quality, his quick feet, his neat passing and his ability to find the gaps in between defenders.

It’s easy to see why both Manchester United and Liverpool would be interested. He could blossom into a very special player indeed, especially if he’s given game time and coaching at a top club.

Having just spent big on Juan Mata, bringing in a cheaper option like Firmino could be a smart move on the part of Manchester United. Let’s just hope that Brendan Rodgers doesn’t stand in David Moyes’ way.

What’s your take? Is Firmino a good option for Manchester United or is he better suited to Liverpool?
