Should Manchester United still compete for this £58m talent?

Edinson CavaniSince moving to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2013 as part of a €64.5m deal, Edinson Cavani has been plagued by accusations that he’s unhappy at his new surroundings. The media seems keen to suggest that the Uruguayan goal-hoarder is dissatisfied with the quality of French league football and that he doesn’t enjoy living in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shadow.

As it happens, Cavani recently moved to poo-poo those claims. Check out this comments, courtesy of The Metro:

“I don’t know why people are saying I’m not happy at PSG – it’s not true. What we talk about in the dressing room should stay there and the private life of a football player has to remain private. I am feeling well in Paris and at PSG.”

That’s pretty definitive, isn’t it? I have to say, I’ve always been bemused by the idea that Cavani is stuck in Zlatan’s shadow. Yes, the Swede has an outrageous public persona, but he’s also only scored 16 goals this season. Cavani has scored 21 goals in 7 fewer games.

He’s also five years younger, so time is on his side. This is a player right at the peak of his game and there’s no reason to believe that he’d be over-awed by the situation he’s currently in.

Cavani’s comments do raise the question as to whether Manchester United should still consider him as a transfer target. According to the aforementioned source, David Moyes had made the Uruguayan one of his ‘key priorities’ in the summer transfer window. Will he now have to change his mind?

I certainly hope not. Manchester United are in a real jam at the moment and could really use the influence of a world class footballer like Edinson Cavani.

The thought of him playing alongside Wayne Rooney is somewhat mouth-watering. These are two strikers with natural goal-scoring ability and they’d be sure to drive The Red Devils back up the Premier League table.

All that remains to be seen is whether Manchester United have enough cash to convince PSG to sell. Earlier last week The Mirror suggested he could cost as much as £58m. That’s a lot of dosh, but if David Moyes is serious about turning the club around, he may need to spend it!

What’s your take? Should Manchester United still be in the market for Edinson Cavani?
