Ezequiel GarayWhilst Manchester United fans will have been delighted to see their team put three goals past Olympiakos, I’m sure this good feeling will have been tempered by the news that they’ve drawn Bayern Munich in the Champions League (and thus probably wont make it to the next round) and Robin Van Persie’s six week injury lay-off (he was the man who scored those goals against the Greeks after all).

I only hope that Manchester United can avoid suffering any further humiliation before the end of the season. I’m not sure David Moyes can take much more, poor bloke.

Moyesy needs to make it to the summer transfer window, when he’ll be given a proper opportunity to woo the kind of players that he wants. That means more players in the Juan Mata mould and less in the Tom Cleverley mould (sorry Tom, I’m sure you’ll develop into a special talent, but you’re not there just yet).

In particular, he needs to take a long, hard look at his defence. Players like Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand are set to move on, whilst the likes of Patrice Evra and Rafael may follow suit. It’s up to Moyes to ensure that Manchester United aren’t hamstrung by this defensive exodus.

The Mirror recently published an article that suggested Manchester United sent a scout to watch long-term transfer target, Ezequiel Garay in action against Tottenham last week.

The Argentine centre-back scored Benfica’s opener in the 2-2 draw and did a fairly good job defensively. It wasn’t exactly his best performance of the season, but it will have given the United scout plenty to think about.

At 27-years-old, he’s developed into a quality centre-back, with speed along the deck and strength in the air. He positions himself well, times his tackles and works hard for the team. As such, I’m sure he’ll fit in nicely at Manchester United.

There’s no word as to how much he might cost, but given all the rumours suggesting that David Moyes will be handed a bumper transfer kitty this summer, I’m sure that this deal wont be too difficult to close.

If Moyes is able to bring in Garay and one or two other defenders, perhaps the loss of their more experienced players wont be so keenly felt.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United finally make a move for Ezequiel Garay?

100% agree that Moyes should close this deal. Garay is the right defender for Man Utd because of his age and style of play. He also has a good goal return which helps every now and then for teams that want to win titles. I also believe Garay has just 1 year left on his contract, so Benfica will want to sell, and Man Utd should be able to secure him for £10 million. Moyes can then into next season with Garay as his main centre back, along with Jones, Evans and Smalling.

I also believe Man Utd need another right back to challenge Rafeal, and possibly 2 new left backs if both Evra and Buttner decide to move on in the summer. Rafeal has been to lax this season and he has not progressed at all. I think his defending is still rash and he has a mistake in him. I do believe Moyes will be looking for a more solid right back in the summer and might even make an offer for Seamus Coleman. In the left back department I guess we all expect Moyes to move for Luke Shaw, although it might be expensive and Chelsea have the edge. I think Moyes will be making a mistake by not heavily scouting Ali Adnan in Turkey. I think he could be the one for Man Utd at left back.
