Liverpool ‘interested’ in £25m talent: should Rodgers make his move?

With Liverpool doing so well at the moment, it’s difficult to think about the summer transfer window. But given that The Mirror has claimed that The Reds are interested in Benfica’s highly-regarded striker, Rodrigo, we’ll make an exception.

Given his £25m price-tag, Rodrigo would be an expensive purchase for The Reds. Despite this, Benfica’s head coach, Jorge Jesus has confirmed that there is interest in his charge. Check out these quotes:

“Rodrigo is going through a good moment. It’s normal. Every Benfica player is in a big window. The league is full of high quality players so it’s normal for other clubs to be interested.”

Rodrigo has been in sparkling form this season, nabbing 10 goals in his last 16 appearances for the Primeira Liga club. Tottenham fans will remember him putting one past Hugo Lloris in Benfica’s 3-1 Europa League win a couple of weeks back.

But he’s more than just an out-and-out goalscorer. He’s got great technique, links up well with the midfield and makes some very intelligent runs.

Considering he’s just 23-years-old and still has plenty of developing to do, it’s clear that this boy has real potential. He’s already beginning to look world class, so imagine what he could achieve over the next couple of season’s time.

Liverpool already have two quality striking options in the form of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, so probably don’t really need to splash the cash on another. Rodrigo’s £25m price-tag certainly won’t appeal to Brendan Rodgers, especially considering his need to sign a defender (or two) and a winger in the summer.

But given Rodrigo’s ability level, I certainly wouldn’t be upset to see Liverpool move in for him. He’s versatile enough to play down the flanks, so he’d be able to fit into first team, even when Sturridge and Suarez are fully fit and in form.

Besides, when a player is this good, he’ll work his way into a side regardless of the players around him.

Perhaps this would be a luxury, but it would be a very agreeable one.
