Mathieu ValbuenaAnother week, another Luis Suarez hat-trick. The game against Cardiff City on Saturday showcased everything that’s good and bad about Brendan Rodger’s side. The game ended with Liverpool winning 6-3 and there could have been more goals on either side.

The Reds were thrilling to watch when they were going forward, but clearly have something of a soft-centre. To put it simply, a team with title aspirations just shouldn’t be conceding three goals to Hull City.

Luckily the Reds attack has proven more than capable of making up for the rest of the team’s shortcomings. I hope that this is something that is built on over the summer (alongside fixing the defense, of course, which must remain Brendan’s number one priority).

In particular, I’d like to see Liverpool improve the service into their world class strikers. With Steven Gerrard getting on in years and the likes of Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho still developing, I can’t help but feel that there’s a need for some middle ground here.

The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that Liverpool target, Mathieu Valbuena, ‘could be offloaded’ by Ligue 1 side Marseille this summer.

The pocket-sized French play-maker has an excellent reputation among football fans. If the Reds are looking to add a little more verve to their midfield, he could be the right man for the job.

As it happens, The Metro also carry some quotes from him, that suggest he is considering his future:

“A departure? To discover something else next season could be interesting. It’s been eight years since I am here at l’OM. I’ve never hidden that an experience abroad tempts me. We’ll see.”

This leaves the door wide open for Liverpool to sneak inside and get their man. Valbuena is a crafty little talent, with bags full of technique and an eye for a pass. He has some experience at the top level and a desire for a new challenge.

All this would make him a very good transfer target for Liverpool. At 29-years-old he may be a little too old to tempt Brendan Rodgers into a move, but he’s certainly got the ability to take The Reds to the next level.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool offer Mathieu Valbuena a new challenge?
