Should Manchester United really be in the market for this Newcastle ace?

Cheick TioteIt’s been a tough season for the Red Devils, but the club still has the financial firepower it needs to pull it back into contention.

Even in its darkest hour, Manchester United have been able to pull off the kind of marquee signing that other clubs couldn’t even dream of.

Signing Juan Mata from Chelsea, a direct rival, is nothing short of a masterstroke. He’s one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, a genuine creative talent and he’s got goal-scoring prowess.

Think about it. Arsenal weren’t able to sign Demba Ba on loan from Chelsea. David Moyes and co. were able to secure a much bigger name from the Blues despite still being a top club and a long-term rival.

The hope is that Juan Mata will fix the creativity issue within Manchester United’s midfield. It’ll be interesting to see what area David Moyes looks to improve next.

According to The Star, Manchester United have their eyes on Cheick Tiote, Newcastle United’s highly regarded defensive midfielder.

That’s right, your dream midfield duo, Mata and Tiote could well end up playing alongside each other. Hurrah!

The Star suggest that United enquired about Tiote during the January transfer window, but they were clearly too busy negotiating with Chelsea to drag this deal across the line.

Manchester United could be about to lose Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the summer, so it makes sense that David Moyes would bring in another defender, even if he is a midfielder. Tiote would offer protection for centre-backs Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling and provide a platform for attacking players like Juan Mata to build upon.

We all know what the Ivorian can offer. He’s an extremely competitive individual, who buzzes around the football pitch, making his presence felt on the opposition, winning the ball and keeping possession. He’s physically tough, positions himself well and works hard.

As defensive midfielders go, he’s a top option. He does have a reputation for picking up cards and suspensions, but given his other qualities, I’d say that this side of his game is forgivable.

Having just lost Yohan Cabaye, Newcastle wont want to lose another midfielder. But we’ve seen how persuasive Manchester United can be in the transfer market. Maybe David Moyes can pull this one out of the bag once again.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils swoop in for this tough-tackling Ivorian?

Tiote is a defensive midfielder and on his day one of the best in the pl. He would benefit from playing with better players around him and free mata with his creativity. Januazi sorry for spelling will be great next season on the flank and if they can buy two classy defenders they will challenge again.
