Can Manchester United afford to lose Nemanja Vidic?

Nemanja VidicSince 2006 Nemanja Vidic has been an integral part of this Manchester United team. It’s difficult to think of the Red Devils without thinking of the big Serb. Could the two really be about to part ways?

Even if injuries have blighted Vidic’s career in recent years, he’s still an important squad player.

In the two seasons prior to this one he only managed to make 33 appearances for the club. This year he’s already made 21 appearances. I’d say he’s heading in the right direction and is well on the way to recovery.

So why then, are The Metro suggesting that Nemanja ‘is set to accept a transfer to Inter Milan’? How have things come to this?

His current Manchester United deal is set to expire at the end of the season and it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he will agree new terms with his current employer. This begs the question: why do Inter Milan rate him if United dont?

With The Metro claiming that Vidic (who’s 32-years-old, let’s not forget) will earn £100k-a-week in Serie A, it’s easy to see why the Serbian international has had his head turned.

The next contract he signs will likely be the last big contract of his career. If this kind of money is really on the table elsewhere, then Manchester United may find it difficult to compete.

But David Moyes isn’t in a particularly privileged position when it comes to his defense. With Rio Ferdinand also likely to move on in the summer, Manchester United are going to find themselves extremely short of options in this department. Will Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans really be able to fill the void?

I’m not so sure. Vidic provides the club with leadership skills, tactical awareness, positional sense and much more. This is going to be seriously difficult to replace.

So much so, that I’m surprised Manchester United haven’t worked harder to get him to agree a new deal. After all, they’re going to have to pay a huge amount of money to bring in anybody who’s even half as good.

Could The Red Devils be about to make a big mistake here?

What’s your take? Can Manchester United afford to lose Nemanja Vidic?
