Should Arsenal snap up this £7m bargain?

Ayoze PérezThere has to be a good reason why Arsene Wenger didn’t sign a striker during the January transfer window. As one of the all time great managers, he can’t be blind to the fact that Arsenal are severely lacking in this department.

Perhaps he’s just waiting for better candidates to make themselves available in the summer? Perhaps the quality of candidates available this January left something to be desired.

Of course, there’s any easy answer to this suggestion: there has to have been players out there who are better than Nicklas Bendtner, right?

Still, we live in hope. Arsenal fans will have their fingers crossed that Arsener Wenger has one or two top transfer targets in mind for when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

He’ll certainly need to sign a world-class striker to compete with Olivier Giroud, but it’ll be interesting to see if he brings in another talented young thing to help add some competition in this area.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal ‘have opened talks’ with Tenerife, for their well regarded young striker, Ayoze Perez. Given that he currently plays in the Spanish second division and that he’s just 20-years-old, I’m sure this news will excite very few people.

But the young lad has found the back of the net 10 times in 21 games this season. He’s also got plenty of qualities that are becoming of Arsenal strikers. For a start, he’s got pace (a quality that is conspicuous by its absence in Oliver Giroud), technical ability and genuine attacking flair.

It’s these qualities that saw Real Madrid make an offer for the player last January. It’s also why Manchester City and Everton are thought to be interested.

The Metro have slapped a £7m price-tag on Perez, which is definitely within the Gunners’ financial wheelhouse. Signing this talented youngster would definitely leave Arsenal with enough spare change to get that ready-made, world class striker that they need.

Arsenal fans wont be jumping up and down about this one, but this could end up being a very smart deal indeed.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Ayoze Perez, or should they concentrate on signing somebody with a little more experience?
