Felipe LuisThere’s definitely going to be lot of change at Old Trafford in the summer. Just about every area of this Manchester United squad needs work. David Moyes will have his work cut out for him.

One area that will definitely need a close inspection is the defence. With Nemanja Vidic on his way out in the summer and Rio Ferdinand seemingly following him to the exit door, he’ll certainly need to sign a centre-back or two. The full-back slots also need assessing.

Patrice Evra is now 33-years-old and has wandered gamely into the autumn of his career. Whilst he still plays with some flair and is capable of great moments, he’s certainly started to slow down this season. As he starts to become increasingly ineffectual, David Moyes will need to be ready with a replacement.

With Alex Buttner still yet to really prove himself, taking to the transfer market is essential. David Moyes isn’t unaware of this. He’s been linked to moves for left-backs Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw in the recent past.

And now TalkSPORT have linked Manchester United to a £20m move for Atletico Madrid left back, Filipe Luis. This is very exciting news indeed. At 28-years-old, Luis is just about to hit his peak.

Whilst he plays with plenty of defensive responsibility, he’s also got technique and attacking flair and is more than capable of creating havoc in the final third. He’d be an asset for just about any club. He certainly has been for Atletico Madrid, who are currently battling it out with Real Madrid and Barcelona for the La Liga title.

With his current Madrid deal set to expire in 2017 his club are in quite a strong position. But if Manchester United are prepared to offer the right amount of cash, I’m sure they could be persuaded.

There’ll be plenty of players heading out of Old Trafford in the summer. But if Filipe Luis comes in the other direction, it’ll be hard not to feel positive about the future of the club. This is exactly what Manchester United need to get back on track.

What’s your take? Who should be Manchester United’s next long-term left-back? Are there better candidates available than Filipe Luis?
