Whilst Arsenal have improved significantly as a defensive unit this season, they have still looked a little overawed against the Premier League big boys.
Arsenal have already recorded defeats against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool this season. The City and Liverpool results particularly stand out, having finished 6-3 and 5-1 to the opposition.
So yes, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker deserve their fair share of compliments for their efforts this season. They’ve done a fine job of shoring up a leaky defense. But, they clearly lack the confidence and experience necessary to shut out football’s brightest and best. How are Arsenal supposed to progress as a club if they’re not capable of doing this?
With Arsenal’s reserve option, Thomas Vermaelen, injured and out of form, the time’s right for a shake-up at the Emirates. Bringing in another centre-back could help provide some competition, motivate the first choice options and make the Gunners a better proposition against tougher competition.
As such, I was pleased to see Sports Direct News link Arsenal to Marseille defender, Nicolas N’Kolou. If Arsene Wenger can beat off competition from the likes of Manchester United, they could end up with the answer to their defensive conundrum.
The 23-year-old is known for his pace on and off the ball, his strength and athleticism and his aerial dominance. He’s a great all round defender who can also distribute the ball efficiently from the back. I can’t help but feel that N’Koulou would slot into this Arsenal team very neatly.
Marseille rate the player very highly but are looking to undertake a complete overhaul of their squad in the summer. As such, N’Koulou could be put out to pasture. If that’s the case, then Sports Direct News make it very clear that there’ll be plenty of competition for him
They suggest that Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Lyon are also in the running for his signature. Still, there’s a good chance that Arsenal will provide more appeal than all of these clubs. If Arsene Wenger is interested, there should be a deal to be done here.
Let’s hope that this isn’t the last that Arsenal fans hear of Nicolas N’Koulou.
